ABA Therapy Parent Training

Receiving an autism diagnosis for your young child can bring a mix of emotions — relief at having answers, but also uncertainty and a deep desire to help your child thrive. As a parent, you want to do everything possible to support your child’s growth, but knowing where to start can feel overwhelming, especially in these crucial early years.

You don't have to navigate this journey alone. At Arms Wide Open ABA, our ABA therapy parent training is designed to empower you with practical tools, real-life strategies and ongoing support to help your child learn, communicate and succeed every day. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps children with autism learn new skills and positive behaviors by breaking them down into manageable steps and using positive reinforcement.

ABA is widely recognized for its effectiveness in supporting communication, social skills and independence in young children. Explore how our family-centered approach to ABA therapy parent training works, what to expect and how we’ll be with you every step of the way.

ABA Parent Training and Its Importance

ABA therapy parent training is a collaborative process where Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and therapists work directly with you, the parent, to teach practical, research-backed strategies you can use at home.

Instead of focusing on what happens during therapy sessions, ABA parent training empowers you to turn everyday moments, like mealtime and bedtime, into opportunities for your child to learn and grow.

At its heart, ABA parent training is about giving you the confidence, knowledge and support to help your child thrive, every single day. Professional support for parents of children with autism can lead to significant improvements in communication, social skills and overall progress.

Parent Training With Arms Wide Open ABA

At Arms Wide Open ABA, we believe that parent training should be practical, supportive and tailored to your family's needs. Our process includes:
  1. Initial assessment and goal setting: You'll meet your BCBA and therapy team, who will get to know your child's strengths and challenges, and your family's daily routines. Together, you'll set personalized goals that matter most to you, whether it's improving communication, easing transitions or building independence.
  2. Collaborative session planning: Your BCBA will design a training plan that fits your schedule and home environment. Sessions are flexible and always focused on real-life situations.
  3. Hands-on training and modeling: During each session, your BCBA will demonstrate ABA strategies with your child. You'll observe, ask any questions and then practice the techniques yourself, with real-time feedback and encouragement.
  4. Guided practices and support: You'll have the opportunity to try out strategies, like using picture cards to request a snack, practicing bedtime routines or managing meltdowns with calm-down tools while your BCBA offers support and troubleshooting.
  5. Progress review and ongoing support: Regular check-ins help track your child's progress, celebrate every success and adjust goals as needed. You'll always have access to your team for questions, resources and encouragement.

Bringing ABA Parent Training Into Everyday Life

ABA parent training is all about turning everyday moments into learning opportunities. Here are some sample activities you might practice with your child as part of your training with Arms Wide Open ABA:
  • Building communication at mealtime: Use picture cards or simple sign language to help your child request food or drinks. For example, before giving your child milk, prompt them to point to or hand you the “milk” card.
  • Managing transitions: Introduce a visual timer or a “first-then” board, such as “first play, then snack,” to help your child understand what’s coming next and reduce anxiety during changes in routine.
  • Practicing daily routines: Break down tasks like brushing teeth or getting dressed into small, manageable steps. Use visual schedules and offer praise for each completed step to build independence.
  • Encouraging positive behavior: Reinforce desired behaviors, such as sharing toys or following directions, with immediate praise, high-fives or a favorite activity.
  • Calming strategies: Teach your child to use a calm-down corner, practice deep breathing or use a favorite sensory toy when feeling overwhelmed.
With these activities, you’ll gain practical tools to support your child’s growth and confidence every day.
