Home-Based ABA Therapy

The environment in autism therapy is critical to the therapy's success. It's an active, powerful element that can support or impede your child's learning.

Autism therapy for children requires a therapeutic environment that fosters safety, comfort, predictability and communication. One such setting is the home. Providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy at a child's home encourages learning in a familiar, supportive and calming environment.

At Arms Wide Open ABA Therapy, we offer ABA therapy in different environments, including at home. We use evidence-based techniques to help children with autism develop communication, social, play and daily living skills.

Understanding In-Home ABA Therapy

Home-based ABA therapy teaches essential skills and addresses challenging behaviors in the comfort of your child's familiar environment. It involves structured and play-based activities that a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) designs to fit into a family's daily life. A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) executes the therapy plan under the supervision of a BCBA.

Key characteristics of at-home ABA therapy include:
  • Personalizing therapy to your child's unique needs and family routine.
  • Involving parents, siblings and other caregivers in the therapy sessions.
  • Teaching family members ABA techniques to reinforce learning outside therapy meetings.
  • Collecting data to track your child's progress and facilitate data-driven treatment adjustments.

What Happens During an In-Home ABA Therapy Session?

A home-based ABA therapy session begins with developing a trusting and fun relationship. The therapist will greet your child warmly and engage in their preferred activity — playing with their toys or joining in whatever your child is doing. This pairing process helps your child associate the therapist with fun, creating trust and making them excited for their session.
Skill Development

Once the therapist has built a relationship with your child, they'll use a dynamic mix of different learning methods such as the following to teach your child helpful skills:

  • Natural environment teaching (NET): They'll use the home environment to teach your child different skills. For instance, if your child wants a snack from the fridge, the therapist will help your child practice requesting what they want. The therapist can also encourage language development by teaching your child toy names during playtime.
  • Structured learning: This teaching approach uses organized and systematic methods to promote skill development. It involves using visual support tools like schedules with pictures to create activity predictability. It also incorporates goal-oriented activities, rewarding desired behavior and breaking down complex tasks into small, sequential steps.
  • Daily living activities: Our at-home therapy services create goals related to self-care tasks like washing hands, dressing, using the toilet and brushing teeth. We break down tasks into small steps to make them easy to follow and remember.
  • Addressing challenging behaviors: If a challenging behavior occurs, we'll take that as a teaching opportunity to encourage a more appropriate alternative skill, like asking for help instead of throwing a tantrum. Depending on the situation, the therapist may use visual aids or modify the environment to prevent the behavior from occurring.
Data Collection

We consistently gather information while teaching skill development. We monitor your child's reaction to instructions, successes and challenges. This data helps us track therapy progress and make informed decisions about the treatment plan.

Examples of the details we collect include:

  • The steps of a task your child can handle independently and the steps they need help with.
  • How many times a challenging behavior happens and its intensity.
  • The level of prompting your child needs.
What's the process?

Contact our office and a member of our team will schedule an intake session to determine your child’s needs and check eligibility for services with your insurance provider. With insurance approval, your child will be assessed by a qualified BCBA who will interpret data and design a customized treatment plan.

Active Family Involvement

We integrate family involvement in our sessions, encouraging you to continue implementing techniques outside therapy. You'll observe how we encourage communication, prompt new skills and respond to challenging behaviors so you can replicate those strategies yourself.

We'll also observe how your child interacts with their siblings and other family members and teach skills to improve communication and interactions.

A Collaborative Wrap-Up

When the session ends, we'll transition your child back to a preferred activity and then take a few minutes to update you on the session. We'll share the day's success and offer techniques you can use before the next appointment. The therapist will also answer any questions you have.

Benefits of At-Home Therapy

At-home therapy is advantageous because it:

Facilitates Learning in a Familiar Environment

The home setting offers comfort and security, eliminating the stress and anxiety typically associated with a clinical environment. Your child is more open to learning when they're at ease. A calm, supportive environment could also improve your child's emotional regulation.

Enables Real-World Skill Application

In-home ABA therapy incorporates techniques into existing daily routines, making it easy for children to learn and practice them.

Encourages Continued Family Support

Home-based ABA therapy involves the family, allowing them to continue supporting the child's progress outside therapy and maximizing the potential for long-term success.

Promotes Independence

At-home therapy teaches daily living skills, which are the foundation for independent living. Instilling these skills in children could make it easier for them to transition into adulthood.
