ABA Therapy Assessments

If you’re exploring Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for your child, you’ve already taken a powerful step toward helping them thrive. At Arms Wide Open ABA, we understand that every family’s journey with autism is unique, and finding the right support can feel overwhelming. That’s why our team is dedicated to making the process as comfortable and clear as possible — starting right in your own home.

Arms Wide Open ABA specializes in at-home ABA therapy designed to meet your child’s individual needs. Our Board-Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) work closely with you to create a personalized plan, beginning with a thorough assessment. On this page, you’ll learn what to expect from our ABA therapy assessments and how we support your family every step of the way.

What Is an ABA Assessment?

An ABA assessment is the first and most important step in your child’s ABA therapy journey. But what is an ABA assessment, exactly? It’s a comprehensive evaluation led by a BCBA to understand your child’s unique strengths, challenges and needs. During this initial ABA assessment, our team gathers information about your child’s communication, social skills, behaviors and daily routines. We also listen closely to your family’s goals and concerns.

An ABA therapy assessment isn’t something your child can “pass” or “fail” — it’s a way for us to get to know them as an individual. The insights we gain from this ABA therapy evaluation allow us to design a personalized treatment plan that supports your child’s growth and your family’s well-being.

At Arms Wide Open ABA, our assessment process is designed to be thorough, supportive and completely tailored to your child. Here’s an overview of our process:

Intake and Insurance Verification

We start by gathering basic information and helping you navigate insurance coverage, so you know exactly what to expect.

Review of Medical and Developmental history

Our BCBA will review your child’s medical records and developmental history to get a comprehensive picture of their background.

Direct Observation and Developmental Testing

We spend time with your child, observing their communication, play and daily routines. We may use simple developmental tests to gain a better understanding of their current skills and abilities.

Parent and Caregiver Interviews

Your insights are invaluable. We’ll talk to you about your child’s strengths, challenges, interests and your family’s goals for ABA therapy.

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)

If your child exhibits challenging behaviors, we’ll conduct an FBA to understand the reasons behind them and determine the most effective ways to support positive change.

Collaboration with Schools or Daycares

If your child attends school or daycare, we can coordinate with teachers and staff to ensure a consistent approach.
Initial ABA therapy assessments, led by our experienced BCBAs, form the foundation for a customized therapy plan that truly fits both child and family.

What to Expect

We know that inviting someone into your home for an ABA therapy assessment can feel like a big step. Our team is committed to making the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. All assessments are conducted in your child’s familiar environment, allowing them to relax and be themselves.

Our BCBAs take a gentle, child-centered approach — moving at your child’s pace and focusing on their strengths. You’ll be involved throughout the process, with open communication and regular updates. We respect your family’s privacy and routines, and we’re always available to answer questions or address concerns.

From handling insurance paperwork to explaining each step, we’re here to support you. Our goal is to make the initial ABA assessment a positive and empowering experience for your entire family.
